Why continue training after you’ve completed puppy classes?

05/08/2022 - Puppy Information

Training your puppy will continue regardless and of course there are many ways to do this, whether it is independently at home, using books/videos or indeed by continuing with training classes. Each option has its own benefits and some will suit you and your lifestyle more than others.

There are so many benefits of having a focus and structure to your ongoing training and here are just a few:

  1. Continuing your training journey will improve and enhance the relationship with your dog. A well-behaved dog is generally a happier one as they will be trusted to join in with day trips, holidays and family events, giving you the true family member you'd hoped for!

  1. Teaching the basics, such as sit, down, paw etc are great but simply learning them isn't always enough. Proofing them is the next step. Yes your dog can sit, but can they sit in all places and situations, around other dogs, whilst you walk away, in busy places etc. This is the fun part, not just teaching the initial cue but ensuring it happens reliably in all situations.

  1. Often we have so many commitments and things on our to do list it is SO easy for weeks to turn into months and minor unwanted behaviours to become bigger problems.  Attending regular training classes helps you to allocate a set time each week to dedicate to your dog and their development.

  1. It's much easier to address things as soon as they arise, nipping them in the bud. Having regular contact with your trainer or being part of a training programme means you've got support and advice on tap as soon as you need it.

  1. When training in real-life, it can be hard to effectively manage everyday situations - for example if your dog gets excited around other dogs, ensuring other people keep their dogs  at a distance where your dog can succeed is really tricky and can affect your training success. With ongoing support your trainer can manage this to ensure your dog's success!

  1. We all know things are easier if you're part of a team! Being part of a training community provides not only dog training but the support of friends, to celebrate when you are doing well but also to boost you when things are more of a struggle!
