It's a SNOW DAY!

01/03/2019 - Potter Paws Blog

Most of us have now been affected by the wintery weather this week. The below freezing temperatures make it unsafe for dogs to enjoy long walks, especially smaller breeds, puppies, elderly dogs and certain breeds. So what can we do to help our dogs stay comfortable and well exercised whilst having fun and enjoying the snow?

Ensure your walks are shorter than normal, the dogs may well love the snow but they are blissfully unaware of the dangers including hypothermia and frostbite. You could give them a couple of extra short walks or invest in a warm coat for them to wear (don’t forget your own hat and gloves too!).

The cold, ice and de-icing chemicals can damage paws leaving them sore and cracked. Ensure the nails and the fur on and around the paw and trimmed to prevent snow clinging to the paws. Apply a paw balm, Vaseline or coconut oil onto the paws before going out to given some added protection or get some funky dog boots! Always wash paws in warm water after being out in the snow to melt any snow/ice clumps and wash off any grit/salt.

Shorter walks may mean extra energy so it’s a great time to try some new games and indoor fun; have a go at the following;
- Play some recall games inside.
- Play hide and seek – hide toys, treats or you for your dog to find.
- Have a few short training sessions and teach your dog a new trick or two.
- Use your dog’s daily food allowance to keep them busy;
  • Put some treats in an empty bottle for your dog to knock around and get the treats out.
  • Fill a kong with their breakfast or some treats.
  • Put food in a toilet roll parcel (empty toilet roll inner with ends folded in) for your dog to unwrap
  • Hide food/treats under cups, in empty egg boxes and let your dog sniff it out.
Don’t forget to have lots of fun with your dog and enjoy your snow day!
