Keeping your dog safe at Christmas

Christmas is exciting and something we look forward to all year. However your dog probably thinks Christmas is a bit strange.... a toilet (also known as a Christmas tree) comes into the house but expect our dog not to wee up it! Suddenly everything sparkles, some men dressed in red shout 'ho, ho ho' and lots of odd things happen!
Spending some time preparing your dog for the festivities will help to ensure that your dog enjoys Christmas as much as you do! Our series of Christmas blogs will help you and your dog prepare.

One of the most important things is to pet proof your home, to ensure your pet stays safe during the run up and over the Christmas period.
  • Keep tinsel and other decorations out of your pet’s reach. Decorations are made from a variety of materials and substances, they could break into sharp pieces, be chewed up or possibly ingested. Some decorations could be poisonous or potentially cause a blockage.
  • Fairy lights, singing ornaments and candle arches are beautiful but usually they involve extra electrical cables and wires. Make sure you keep any wires safely out of your pet’s reach particularly if they are fond of chewing things!
  • Not only do we bring a toilet into the house, we decorate it with shiny and glittery balls!!! Ensure your pet does not play with any glass baubles hanging from the Christmas tree. These can not only break and cut their mouth/paws they are also a choking hazard and could cause serious injury.
  • If you have a real tree, keep pine needles cleaned up from floors to stop them injuring little paws or being eaten. It is also worth considering that some types of tree can release oils that can cause allergies.
  • Our festive favourite plants such as Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettia, Christmas cactus, Cyclamen, Amaryllis and Christmas rose,  plants are all poisonous to dogs and cats so keep them out of reach.
  • Chocolate tree decorations and any extra chocolate treats should be kept out of reach.
  • Keep any lit candles at a safe distance/height from those wagging tails.
  • Mince pies, Christmas pudding and Christmas Cake usually contain raisins (and alcohol!) which can cause serious illness and be potentially fatal so keep them out of reach.
  • When placing your gifts neatly around the tree, be sure you don’t leave any wrapped chocolate or sweet gifts unattended to tempt your dog. We all know chocolate is bad for dogs but many sweets also contain xylitol which is also poisonous.
  • If your pet is curious and inquisitive, it might be best to surround the Christmas tree with a child's playpen and avoid any incidents!
