Getting to know Mary at Rumsey's

20/11/2020 - Supporting Small Businesses

Welcome to our first ‘Supporting local businesses’ blog series, designed to showcase dog-related and dog-friendly small businesses in and around Aylesbury.  Times have been pretty hard with the impact of Coronavirus and so if we can do anything at this time to support others then we’re all for it!

We’ve asked a number of local business owners a series of questions to find out more about them and their business. First up is Mary Rumsey of Rumsey’s Chocolaterie and we absolutely love the story behind how Rumsey’s opened for business!

Rumsey's Thame

How long have you been in business?

We opened the shops almost 16 years ago, making chocolate for about 10 years before that from home kitchen, selling at craft fairs etc.

What was the reason you started your business?

The seeds of the business began in 2001 from our family kitchen in Aylesbury. Nigel, my husband, had been a patisserie chef for 20 years when a colleague asked if he would make a batch of chocolates for him to take home to his family. He enjoyed making them so much that he made a second batch for own extended family too. Through word of mouth demand snowballed, and the love for chocolate grew!

Do you have a pet? If so, what do you have and what is their name/s?

Two dogs - Harry (border collie) and Bhodi (springer)

What is your favourite dog breed?

Don't make me choose, I love them both!

Who is your favourite famous dog, or favourite film featuring a dog that you love to watch?

My grandchildren make me watch A LOT of Paw Patrol, does that count?

What is your favourite quote?

Stressed spelled backwards is DESSERTS

What's your favourite way to spend a Sunday?

When we aren't working we always like to go on a long dog walk on a Sunday. Then come home and chill out with the family over a leisurely Sunday lunch and of course a delicious dessert!

Remember
Supporting a business is something we can all do – it doesn’t have to involve putting our hands in our pockets because there are plenty of other ways that you can show your support and appreciation to a local small business including:
  • Share and engage with their social media
  • Recommend them to a friend
  • Tag them in opportunities
  • Leave a review
  • Give them shoutouts on your social networks
