A dog is for life, not just for Christmas!

08/12/2020 - Training

During this festive season, many people think the paws-itively perfect present would be a new addition to the family, either a dog or a puppy.  Hearing the pitter patter of tiny paws is a big consideration when you think that the average lifespan of a dog is 13 years or more.

Here are 10 things you would be barking mad not to consider before committing to a dog:

  1. Dogs are for life – the average lifespan of a dog is 13 years, it is a long commitment, from puppy through to the golden oldie years.
  2. Breed Research – think about the type of breed that will suit your family and lifestyle. Also make sure you go to a reputable breeder, research them, ask friends recommendations.
  3. Time Consuming – once you have committed to a dog you have responsibilities. Similar to being a parent of a child, you will have a dependent whose needs, and wellbeing come first.
  4. Lifetime Costs – the average costs of owning a dog can be around £16,900 depending on breed, size, health etc
  5. Pet Healthcare – It is important to get good insurance for your pet to cover any unexpected health bills.
  6. Exercise Needs – dependant on the breed of dog you get they will require regular exercise, usually at least one good walk a day, if not more.
  7. Child Friendly – do your research before bringing a dog into the family home, you may need some meet ups before hand to introduce children to the dog, so they can all get to know one another.
  8. Pet Proofing the home – Just like child proofing a home it is important to keep your dog safe, removing hazards and putting safety measures in place.
  9. Training – this is a great way to help you understand your dog and how to help them be the best dog they can be. Your dog can learn the ropes and get a chance to meet fellow pup pals.
  10. Family Member – your dog will be a family member also, they will need love, affection and attention and they will also give this back in abundance.

Getting a canine companion can be truly pawsome and make your family feel complete. Please make sure, however, that you are ready to share your home and life with a dog and in return you will receive plenty on pugs and licks.  Our Pre- Puppy/Dog Consultations are a great way for you to discover more about dog ownership, what to expect, and seek advice and support giving you a proactive approach to dog-parenting.
